Mid Morning Music Video #324 - ‘Take Care’ by Drake ft. Rihanna
There’s something very special happening throughout ‘Take Care’. It’s just this thing that happens halfway through the 17 tracks when you realise that you are listening to one of the best things released on a CD this year. This here is the title track, and it’s probably the most immediate thing on the album. It’s certainly the most Pop, with a capital ‘P’, thing on the album, those piano chords that start the track and then run throughout it are a strong hook, but when those drums kick in come 0:54 is when it really pulls itself up into the stratosphere in terms of quality. Those drums are big drums, and big drums are good. Jamie xx produced this, and although it’s largely, I believe, a steal from some of the work he did with Gil Scott Heron’s ‘I’m New Here’ to produce ‘We’re New Here’, possibly one of the prime post-midnight albums of the year, his production style not only suits Drake’s voice and rapping style, it also works very well in amongst the work that 40’s done on the rest of the album, making for a consistent sound through all 80 minutes and 13 seconds of the album. So there’s something about this song in particular that makes it stand out - like I said, it’s the most Pop song on the album, and perhaps there’s some genius behind that, it could be viewed very easily as an ‘in’ to the rest of the album, including the more croony, smokey, sex-club-at-three-in-the-morning moments of ‘Crew Love’, or the pining, sad Drake of ‘Marvin’s Room’, which is unarguably the best thing Drake has ever put his hand to. I really wouldn’t be surprised to see this released as the next single or something. Oh, and it’s definitely the best thing Rihanna’s been involved in this year, so that’s certainly something.
