Mid Morning Music Video #358 - ‘Take Care’ by Drake ft. Rihanna
The best song of 2011 gets a video treatment that it rightfully deserves. Just a spectacular piece of art.

Drake in a suit is making my lady parts tingle.
(I don’t even have lady parts. How is that possible?)
Mid Morning Music Video #324 - ‘Take Care’ by Drake ft. Rihanna
There’s something very special happening throughout ‘Take Care’. It’s just this thing that happens halfway through the 17 tracks when you realise that you are listening to one of the best things released on a CD this year. This here is the title track, and it’s probably the most immediate thing on the album. It’s certainly the most Pop, with a capital ‘P’, thing on the album, those piano chords that start the track and then run throughout it are a strong hook, but when those drums kick in come 0:54 is when it really pulls itself up into the stratosphere in terms of quality. Those drums are big drums, and big drums are good. Jamie xx produced this, and although it’s largely, I believe, a steal from some of the work he did with Gil Scott Heron’s ‘I’m New Here’ to produce ‘We’re New Here’, possibly one of the prime post-midnight albums of the year, his production style not only suits Drake’s voice and rapping style, it also works very well in amongst the work that 40’s done on the rest of the album, making for a consistent sound through all 80 minutes and 13 seconds of the album. So there’s something about this song in particular that makes it stand out - like I said, it’s the most Pop song on the album, and perhaps there’s some genius behind that, it could be viewed very easily as an ‘in’ to the rest of the album, including the more croony, smokey, sex-club-at-three-in-the-morning moments of ‘Crew Love’, or the pining, sad Drake of ‘Marvin’s Room’, which is unarguably the best thing Drake has ever put his hand to. I really wouldn’t be surprised to see this released as the next single or something. Oh, and it’s definitely the best thing Rihanna’s been involved in this year, so that’s certainly something.

Mid Morning Music Video #317 - ‘Make Me Proud’ by Drake [feat. Nicki Minaj]
This is very good. Definitely up there on the same plain as ‘Headlines’ for me. Really really looking forward to ‘Take Care’ now. The week of November 14th will be a damned good week, with this and the new Los Campesinos! record coming out. Huzzah!

Mid Morning Music Video #313 - ‘Headlines’ by Drake
Drake’s ‘Headlines’ gets a proper video. Banquets, lifts, baseball fields and a disused buiilding with ‘OVOXO’ written on the side all feature. Still really hot on this song, really enjoying the build up to ‘Take Care’, which drops about in three weeks time.
Mid Morning Music Video #295 - ‘The Zone’ by The Weeknd (feat. Drake)
The new The Weeknd mixtape, ‘Thursday’, (available here and completely free) is, I have come to the conclusion, completely and utterly fantastic. I think I might rate it slightly below ‘House Of Balloons’, the other free mixtape they released earlier this year (there’s another one due to drop later this year as well, called, rumour has it, ‘Echoes Of Silence’) in terms of favourites, although this is possibly because I’ve spent five months in the company of that, as opposed to the week that I’ve spent in the company of this one. This is probably the song that is the closest relative to ‘House Of Balloons’ on it, others diversify the sound slightly whilst maintaining the smoky Saturday morning hangover feel (or late night, post-night out filthy strip bar feel, I’m never sure which I would rather liken the music to, to be honest with you. It’s possibly a bit of both.), but this track could happily sit on the first mixtape. Drake raps about one night stands and fucking girlfriends, and I think about groupies as well, but generally I think this could be his best guest rap appearance in quite a while, he seems to have fallen into a sexual encounter, rather than been looking for one, and whilst his rap hints at breaking into a good ‘Marvin’s Room’-esque croon, it never quite gets there. Meanwhile, Tesfaye is a bit more worried about getting into his zone in the moment of sex (yeah, there’s a whole lot of sex going on on both these mixtapes, actually. Sadsexy, as Miles would say.), seemingly so he can imagine himself making love to someone else through his latest conquest. Yup, really. But it’s very amazing, this is, and both mixtapes. Well worth your time, if you enjoy this one here.

Mid Morning Music Vide #294 - ‘She Will’ by Lil’ Wayne, ft. Drake
I’ve been really digging on this today. It’s odd, I’m not normally that big on Lil’ Wayne at all, but there’s something fantastic about this that I can’t quite put my finger on.
Mid Morning Music Video #287 - ‘Headlines’ by Drake
Hey look, it’s more new Drake. This is actually definitely on ‘Take Care’, it’s the lead off single. It sits on the fence between being ‘Over’ and being ‘Trust Issues’. It is still very very good, but there’s something in there that I’m a little bit unsure about. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but there’s just a sense of it not quite being as great as it could be, prehaps. I mean, I think it’s really really good, great even, I’ve listened to it a lot already today. I think it sort of feels like a bridge between the ‘Thank Me Later’ bangers and his current more downbeat stuff, kind of like taking the wider audience (i.e. those who haven’t been on top of the recent stuff he’s been dropping) and easing them on to that more downbeat material. Still very very ace. Those strings are immense.
Mid Morning Music Video #278 - ‘Over’ by Drake
Apparently Drake’s new album, ‘Take Care’, is dropping on October 24th. Twitter says so. Much as I’m enjoying the sad RnB slant of ‘Marvin’s Room’ and ‘Trust Issues’, I really hope it has a banger like this on it somewhere too.

Meanwhile, Drake’s ‘Marvin’s Room’ has got a video. The song is still awesome, the video is very nice.
Mid Morning Music Video #263 - ‘Trust Issues’ by Drake
Drake brings it again. The run up to ‘Take Care’ is very, very promising.

I am definitely OK with Drake’s new record (24th October, apparently) being only sad, slow RnB jamz. Very definitely.
I’m just sayin’, you could do better
Tell me have you heard that lately
I’m just sayin’ you could do better
And I’ll start hatin’, only if you make me

Oh. Oh. OH MY GOODNESS.
Yeah, love this.

Still the best thing on a sunny Monday morning from the past five years. Even if the video and radio edit does mess with the best lyrics in the whole song.

Mid Morning Music Video #207 - ‘Medley’ by Rhianna, ft. Drake and Kanye West
Look at this awesome Rhianna medley! It features ‘Umbrella’, ‘Only Girl (In The World)’, ‘Rude Boy’, ‘What’s My Name?’ and ‘All Of The Lights’! It’s pretty damned awesome!
(Are all of Rhianna’s songs about sex? I hadn’t really thought about it until now.)
