Mid Morning Music Video #329 - ‘Memory Of You’ by Nicola Roberts
Yesterday, something amazing happened. Nicola Roberts dropped her ‘Yo-Yo’ single (possibly the best song off of ‘Cinderella’s Eyes’, for the record) backed by this, a solo version of ‘Memory Of You’, originally by Girls Aloud, and released as a B-Side to ‘The Loving Kind’. This is it, right here. Give it a listen, it’s probably Girls Aloud’s best B-Side, after ‘above ‘Hoxton Heroes’, which narrowly edges out ‘Dog Without A Bone’ for second place. Anyway, in Nicola’s hands, it stays pretty faithful, and yet becomes even more amazing. Imagine getting as close to Robyn as it is possible to get without actually being Robyn, or a Girls Aloud song that is a slightly more bass-y ‘Untouchable’ and you’re basically there. It’s incredible, and makes me do a little happy dancey smiley thing.

Mid Morning Music Video #292 - ‘Lucky Day’ by Nicola Roberts
Full video has just gone live. It’s still properly awesome, there’s loads of colour thrown in on this, all over the place, and brightly coloured sperm on a wall. No, for serious. Most importantly, that bum bounce move from the ‘Beat Of My Drum’ is featured in this. I hope that’s becoming a thing. It’s awesome. The song is, as I’ve already said, all sorts of awesome, more of a straightforward pop song than ‘Beat Of My Drum’. I want to be best friends with Nicola Roberts. We’d just go for coffee and shoot the shit. It would be great.

BOOM! Awesomepopmusicexplosion. Video is some kind of rough, uneditted thingy. But the song is a proper pop song. It’s got a huge chorus. Massive drums. Big synths. All those good things, and a breakdown. Breakdowns are my favourite bit of pop music. It’s definitely not ‘Beat Of My Drum’ or ‘Porcelain Heart’. But is probably reasonably close to being another ‘Disco, Blisters And A Comedown’ with less tongue in cheek lyrics. Generally amazing, though.

YES! YES! YEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSS! INCREDIBLE. ‘5 pm, my Topshop order’s here, I sent my best friend home, looks like she’s been Tangoed’.

Oh sweet baby Jesus and the orphans. World, meet your new Pop Queen. Pop Queen, meet the World. It’s yours now.
In a ‘This Is A Serious Feature, I Should Actually Write About The Song A Bit’ paragraph, I would say the following - this is the future of all pop music. It is a downbeat electro-track, in the vein of an ‘Every Heartbeat’ except a bit more out and out ravey. Think ‘Every Heartbeat’ x ‘Dancing On My Own’. Perhaps. It definitely sits nicely between the two. It has an excellent breakdown. It also has Nicola Roberts pronouncing the word ‘down’ in The Best Way Ever. 1:22 is the point you want to go for that. There’s this amazing throbby synth in the verse which is so insistent. And the bridge is Up There in terms of bridges. Way Up There. And then the chorus is this really breathy repetition of the word ‘heart’ as the music cranks up again behind it. It is for dancing to, but sadly. Oh and THE INTRO. The Intro is all twinkly and amazing for, like, five seconds. It gives me shivers.
How is this only a B-Side?

You know how when someone says ‘Lady Gaga is the best popstar in the world’ and you’re all like ‘eh, Robyn, actually’? Next time someone says ‘Cheryl is the best member of Girls Aloud’, you can now all be like ‘eh, Nicola, actually’. This really is quite amazing, I enjoy how slightly self-conscious she looks as she busts out the moves. Also good bits: drum line, breakdown, man dressed completely in blue, the dirt off the shoulder brush at the end, HAIR.

Just skip to 5:50 if you want to avoid Scott Mills asking questions about Lady Gaga. Amazing. Starts off sounding like M.I.A., then sounds like Uffie in the verses, then has this singy bridge thing, then a big pop chorus, repeat, then this absolutely fucking amazing breakdown which is all glitchy and bloody incredible (more breakdowns please, pop stars.), then big pop chorus to end. Only minor complaint is that the chorus doesn’t really work next to the verses. Seperately, they are awesome - together they jar a bit. But it is amazing. Still.

Mid Morning Music Video #240 - ‘Untouchable’ by Girls Aloud
Guys, this is what happens when you give Nicola the brunt of the singing work on a song. YOU GET THE BEST SONG EVER. And given that the Nicola solo album (‘Cinderella’s Eyes’, kids) won’t feature Sarah or Cheryl, it will be 20% better and 100% less racist than this! Imagine that!
(This is the fourth time I have put this song in here. But it is the best. It really is.)
Too young to buy my own bottle of vodka so I begged the driver, ‘please I need another’. How funny that I was too young for so many things, yet you thought I’d cope with being told I’m ugly over and over. I’d read it, believe it, said no to the shrink. I can fix it, I think…

This here link will take you to a webpage. On that there webpage you will see a the initials NR, and then the phrase #beatofmydrum, with a picture of some shoes. If you then click that phrase, it links to a twitter page, on which it will tell you that there are just 2 days to go until ‘Beat Of My Drum’, and links to some more pictures of shoes. That twitter page has three tweets, all retweeted and hashtagged #beatofmydrum - one is from Henry Holland, presumably to do with the fashion stuff in the pictures. More exciting are the other two - the most recent one is from Metromony (Metromony!!) and the other one is from Diplo (Fucking Diplo man!!!!!!).
All this points to a few things that we can deduce, in a Sherlock Holmes manner:
That is all. I’m a couple of days late on this news, but I don’t care.
